Gone are the days when Open Distance Learning (ODL) courses by institutes merely offered a correspondence course for a  Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree. This concept has indeed come of age and is nearing its demise with its pair of foot all set for the liberated celestial journey with no possible signs of reincarnation. In this knowledge and information driven progressive economy, the trend has shifted towards several short-term and long-term diploma courses based on the needs of the earner. As a result, many working professional and those pursuing continuing education consider distance learning a valuable option.

Western education has already proven to the world, that if information and communication technology is harnessed in an effective manner by the use of multi-media, video-conferences and online material along with proactive student support system, ODL can reach every home where an aspirant is willing to thrive. Let no geography, finance and time be a limitation for such aspirants. It is not a myth but instead of reality. It is a mature process of erudition and is no less inferior to the conventional way of learning. University of London’s external program is one of the glaring examples of how such a system of lucrative learning for students can be so effective and also have equally popular acceptance in and amongst the employer community.

However, critics and skeptics against it, nationally and internationally, have argued about class room discussion, peer interaction and team projects which are not possible in the ODL system and thus being it’s obvious demerit. Internet revolution has indeed failed every argument of such critics, as in the day and age of internet networking communities like Orkut, Facebook and Youtube and many others which successfully exist, finding an educational peer partner for discussion of projects through internet or internet communities dedicated to the ODL system of learning should not be a distant dream. As a private educational service provider with a social mission, we believe this system of education is a major break through and harnessing such opportunities as per industry specific needs will certainly be a contribution of some proportions to the expected growth story of the ‘Indian Incorporation’.

It is a sordid fact that the majority amongst 70% of the present youth of India will not find a conventional management or a business school of repute to horn their skills as our country does not have that many conventional institutions in proportion to our demographic requirements. Thus, it evidently argues the case in favor of an effective mechanism of ODL system of learning , and it’s time that our youth community uses all the ten gears of life, and cycle speedily ahead without allowing any dichotomy of not joining this present day revolution.
